Week 5 – Saturday, August 24, 2019

Hi Y’all,

It’s Kaylin here for your weekly email pleasure this week!

How are your runs going so far? The turnout for Saturday and weekly runs has been really motivating to see (keep the posts coming)!! I think we have record numbers hitting the track (it’s not just a Wednesday “thing” anymore!). If you have not yet attended a track workout, you should(!), but ONLY if you want to get FASTER…..just sayin’. ? Our group has expanded this year and we’re pushing almost 350 members! Our main mission is to provide support, encouragement and positive energy to members who are trying to reach their goals, whether it’s to walk or run their first (or their 1,235th) 5k, 10k, half marathon or full marathon. If you’re a new member and still haven’t attended one of the organized Saturday runs, please come out (details below for this Saturday) – you’re guaranteed to meet some fabulous and motivating people, maybe even your future forever run partner! We’ve all been “the new person” at some point in time, so we’ll help ya get connected with people of your same pace. You just have to come out and show up. ?

Pretty soon we’ll be saying bye to August (we hardly knew you) and we’re already seeing posts and fanfare from some of our first races of the season!! LOVE love love to see those race posts, and post-run selfies, keep ‘em coming BIG! The heat index is still in the 100s (“Embrace the Suck”) and we’re all waiting (patiently?!?!) for the first real cold front to push through. I hope your training is going well and you’re staying hydrated and injury free. If you can just press on in spite of the heat, you’ll be so happy you did… cooler temps are coming, folks!

Now on to some running related business….

#PARRSaturdayRun……and Chocolate Milk Y’all!!
We are at Turner for a few more weeks until the hills wrap up and then we’ll move to Wild Pear. The run duration is getting longer, so we’re going to start a bit earlier every week. Please take notice of the earlier start times this week.

Full Marathon: 5:15 AM – Meet at Turner High School – 100 minutes, at least 10 hills this week. Run back and forth across the Bailey bridge at an easy or marathon pace.
Since most of you will finish 10 hills before 100 minutes, you can add some time/miles before you get to the bridge. Let’s start by running West along Bailey Rd. until you get to Harkey Rd. Turnaround at Harkey and head back toward Bailey Bridge to do your 10 hills. Once you finish the 10 hills, head back to Turner and continue running until you get to 100 minutes.

Water will be provided at the west side of Bailey Bridge.

Half Marathon: 5:45 AM – Meet at Turner High School. Easy Run – 60-70 Minutes: Conversational easy pace (1-2 minutes slower than marathon pace.)

Route will be DIFFERENT THAN PREVIOUS WEEK. ROUTE – run east on Bailey Rd. toward Bailey Bridge, continue past HWY 35 and go south/right on Pearland Parkway and then east/left on Dixie Farm (if necessary) until you get to 30-35 minutes and turnaround and return to Turner.

Water will be provided at the intersection of Pearland Parkway and Bailey Rd.

Walking group: 5:45 AM – 60-70 minutes – Same route as the Half Marathon group. Meet at Turner High School parking lot for 60-70 minutes. ROUTE – walk east on Bailey Rd. toward Bailey Bridge, continue past HWY 35 and turn south/right on Pearland Parkway until you get to 30-35 minutes and turnaround and return to Turner.

All groups should be back at Turner parking lot at 7:00 AM (ish) for CORE. Be sure to bring your mat or towel, your elbows will thank you for it! This week we are in for a little extra treat, as our wonderful #PARRMilkAndTacoRunners volunteers will be bringing chocolate milk for us to enjoy after the run!

#PARRwater
As we continue to “EMBRACE THE SUCK” of our lovely Houston heat and humidity, our GRATITUDE goes out in a BIG way to our PARR Water Volunteer team. We all love that ice cold water at the bottom of that bridge or the end of that run, right? Please consider volunteering for our PARR Water team… we NEED you and will LOVE you for it! Travis Shirley coordinates the schedule and you can add yourself by signing up via the SignUpGenius and joining the PARR Water FB Group . Travis has provided the instructions in the SignUpGenius. Let’s fill this up so we don’t have to worry later down the road. And if you’ve done this before, he made it WAY SIMPLER with a little help from our friends at Wild Pear. So be sure to read it and note the change. It’s a set out and pick up on the same day.
